Chelsea skipper John Terry is an amazing force on the pitch. A man not to be taken too lightly, he has a passion for the game similar to that of a young child - he never appears to tire of the match. Add to that his charismatic personality that enables him to be a fantastic leader and there you have it - a FIFA World Player of the Year. Right?
Not according to FIFA. Not to take away from any of the Chelsea players nominated for the award, but surely something went a little askew in the selection process.
Since when does the captain of the English Champions, a man who at 24 has earned himself a permanent spot in the England squad and has been selected by many Britons as the one to take over from GoldenBalls, not get nominated for the prestigious FIFA World Player of the Year award?
Many feel that there is a hidden agenda in leaving him out - to include Terry is to draw attention to his strengths for club and for country and it is the latter that will concern many. To draw attention to the strengths of one would-be captain will in turn draw attention to the short comings of a current England captain perhaps?
It would do no good for the morale of an England side so lacking the cohesion they need to succeed. Indeed it may divide the ranks somewhat between players happy with the status quo and players seeing a need for change, with support for the change side coming from a fabulous win against Poland this past week, in the absene of current England captain David Beckham.
Whatever the reason, we will never really know why excellence so often seems to go unrecognized. But we all kow in our hearts who the Chelsea Player of the year will be.
Our Verdict: Terry still tops in our books
