Fulham boss on and off

Fulham manager Chris Coleman was sent off on Saturday in a match against Man United - he was justifiably angry when an obvious offside was ignored and it led to a United goal.

But after being sent "off", he was seen "on" less than five minutes later.

Coleman went down the tunnel and proceeded to plant himself in the stands, stick an earpiece in his ear and start chatting to the staff on the bench.

Let's flashback to last season when Mourinho was serving a touchline ban.

The press was all over the fact that Mourinho couldn't possibly be away from his beloved Chelsea and there was mad speculation that Mourinho would find a way to communicate one way or another with his bench staff.

Chelsea fitness coach Rui Faria was scrutinised by the press and practically slandered by the media when they attempted to say that he was "illegally" communicating with Mourinho by earpiece/mobile phone in one match because of a hat he was wearing. The following match, thanks to the media witch hunt, Faria was searched by officials fearing that the press was correct, once again proving the point that the media's influence on football officialdom is substantial and extremely dangerous.

Is the press so extremely anti-Chelsea that they chose to focus on an alleged behaviour that was in fact within the rules of UEFA?

Are the rules surrounding communication between an ousted manager and his bench staff so different between the FA and UEFA that in one competition communication is allowed and in another competition communication is not allowed?

Or is there such a massive disciplinary difference between a sending off, and a suspension? Keep in mind that when Mourinho was sent off during a Chelsea-Liverpool match, he was not allowed in the stands and instead had to watch the match from the press room with no communication to his bench permitted.

It all smells a little off to me. But then what do I know - I'm a Chelsea fan. Coleman better hope that he has more friends in media circles than Mourinho and Chelsea do.
Our Verdict: We await the media-Fulham witch hunt
