The Daily Mail has an article today that caught my attention, "Sorry JT, but Stevie deserves run at the captaincy".
At first I was hesitant to read an article carrying such a bizarre and hasty headline, but curiosity got the better of me. I should have known better, as Mr Powell is known to have an agenda against Chelsea.
"Gerrard is as determined as Terry but brings a far wider range of gifts to the argument. There was plenty of time to examine the alternatives."
Which gifts would those be? A single good ball forward to Peter Crouch, and he is qualified to take the Captaincy from John Terry? I didn't see much inspiration outside the first ten minutes of the match. Nor did anybody else who was watching without Gerrard-tinted glasses.
In fact, Gerrard made as many footballing mistakes as the heavily slated Lampard. Spain controlled 35 minutes of the opening half - where was this inspirational captain we read about?
The article then goes on to read that John Terry would have been watching and learning from Steven Gerrards performance, almost as if he was awe - something the captain of back to back Premiership Title winners obviously needs.
So if we are to believe what we read, one night in Istanbul, alot of luck, and a comeback against a very complacent Milan side consitutes a better captain. Complement that with two out of two losses as England Captain and we clearly have a true leader.
A case is also made that Rio and Woodgate are so solid at the back, that Terry will find it difficult to get a place back in the side. Was this article written before the match?
Gerrard is subsituted at half time, and the team concedes a goal almost 20 minutes into the second half. Simple footballing minds would have you believe that it was this subsitution alone that cleared the path for Spain to score.
There couldn't have been any other factors involved, could there? Perhaps Iniesta's goal was fantastic, and Woodgate was turned inside out? That would be too easy.
Sorry Jeff, but Gerrard's performance last night was about as good as your article.
Our Verdict: The anti-chels strikes again
