Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as the new Inter Manager, and reports abound of course that he will be bringing along with him Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Ricardo Carvalho. Is there any truth in it? No doubt the names being chucked around are in fact three players very close to Mourinho. But departure? Really?
Well, Drogba started the rumours last summer when he made a statement in a French newspaper stating that he wanted to win a title with his old club Marseilles. While some of the meaning may have been slightly lost in translation then, the intention to eventually move on from Chelsea was made clear.
This may well be what Drogba has been waiting for since the dismissal of Mourinho in September - his comittment to the club and his fellow players has never been in question; his comittment to (then) Grant and Abramovich is though, and many hold that he will be departing the Bridge this summer.
Frank Lampard's new contract has yet to be finalised. However the same story was being played last summer with no truth to it. There are connections for him to Mourinho, however the likelihood of him leaving Chelsea is minimal at best and the rumours are no doubt an inexact extrapolation of circumstance. And of course, the denial of such rumours could be seen by some as a blatant disregard for the truth and a Stamford Bridge world viewed with rose-tinted glasses. Almost a collective breath-holding by Blues fans that such news would never come.
Ricardo Carvalho is a phenomenal centre-half who shone all season and whose profile in European football continues to grow with each match played. The stoic Portuguese partnered effectively and almost effortlessly with John Terry and was a major contributor to Chelsea this season. However, it was Mourinho who brought him to Chelsea, and many feel that no matter what his allegiances are to Chelsea, his connection with Mourinho is stronger.
The Special One is a charismatic leader who built solid relationships with his players; the unofficial announcement from Inter today no doubt will have pricked a few ears and caused a few to stand up and take notice. There can be few players in football who don't want to work with Mourinho - perhaps then it is Mourinho's foes, the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, and not Chelsea fans, who are holding their breath in fear of what may come (or go).
Our Verdict: lets just wait and see shall we
